Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
