Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
