A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
